Delivering high-impact crisis communications training where it matters the most

Crisis Communications for a Tourism Destination Workshop on Santorini

The importance of preparedness and continuous training in effectively managing a communications crisis for a tourism destination – especially one with global visibility such as Santorini – was at the heart of the Workshop recently organized at the popular destination by the Region of South Aegean, at the premises of Hotel De Sol, with the support of the Santorini Hoteliers Association.

Through the immersive use of video-based simulated crisis scenarios the Workshop brought together representatives of the regional government, local authorities, and Hospitality industry professionals, with the aim of equipping them with the tools and confidence needed to respond effectively and in one voice, to potential crisis situations. The material used was sponsored by the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels.

The Workshop was led by renowned communications experts, Ms. Katia Makri and Mr. Zacharias Loudaros, who guided participants through a unique, hands-on educational experience.

Statements by the organizers:

Mr. George Hatzimarkos, Governor of the South Aegean Region, stated:

The strengthening of the resilience and reputation of our islands against threats that may arise from a potential crisis or other unforeseen event is a strategic priority for the Region of South Aegean. In recent years, we have been called upon to manage successive major crises, all of which have confirmed that communication management – both through the media and social media is just as important as operational management in the field.

The reputation of our islands is their most valuable asset, and we leave nothing to chance. Proper preparation, a detailed plan, and clearly defined roles of responsibility are what make the difference in difficult times, and these are the elements that build trust, as highlighted in the training Workshop we conducted.

I would like to warmly thank the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels for our cooperation, the Municipality of Thira for its hospitality, and the company ‘effectus’, which was responsible for the training. When ideas and forces come together, the result always brings value and benefit to all.”

The Mayor of Thira, Mr. Nikos Zorzos, stated:
“ Santorini was formed by a biblical catastrophe 3,500 years ago. This gave it its distinctive and unique beauty. I would say that its creation resembles the Creation of the World -a small Big Bang. As a unique and exceptional place, with a special geo-environment, it also requires different management approaches, as Santorini is a volcano.

In every crisis, beyond the importance of addressing geohazards, communication management is equally crucial-mainly to avoid panic.

I would like to congratulate the organizers on their initiative in implementing this seminar. The tools, videos, and practical exercises presented provide valuable guidance for all of us, so that we can communicate responsibly and effectively under demanding conditions.”

On behalf of the Santorini Hoteliers Association, President Mr. Antonis Pagonis emphasized:

“At a time when challenges for tourist destinations are increasing, the Hoteliers Association, in cooperation with the Region, proceeded with organizing an event focused on crisis management in tourist areas.

This initiative clearly highlights the social role of the Association, as well as its moral obligation to the society of Santorini. Tourism is not only about the economy; it is directly connected to safety, everyday life, and the quality of life of residents. Through such actions, cooperation, preparedness, and responsibility among all stakeholders are strengthened, with the aim of creating a destination that is safer, more resilient, and more sustainable for everyone. The Hoteliers Association will continue to undertake initiatives that serve not only the sector but also the wider local community.”

Statements by participants on their seminar experience

The Mayor of Kea, Ms. Irini Velissaropoulou, said:
“Personally, the seminar answered many of my questions and gave me practical guidance. It was clear, understandable, and highly informative. Situations such as wildfires and floods are now part of reality, and it is important to know how to manage them-not only in the field but also on a communication level. Proper and timely information for citizens plays a decisive role in avoiding fake news and malicious or misleading information. As mayors, we have the responsibility to speak clearly, honestly, and without unnecessary exaggeration, so that citizens know what is truly happening. Congratulations to the Regional Governor, Mr. Hatzimarkos, for the choice of topic and to the entire team for the excellent implementation of the seminar.”

The Mayor of Kimolos, Mr. Konstantinos Ventouris, noted in the same spirit:
“The seminar on Crisis Communication Management in Santorini was one of the most important and meaningful training experiences we have attended, significantly enhancing preparedness, cooperation, and responsible information-sharing for the protection of the credibility of our islands.”

The mayor of another small Cycladic island, Mr. Kyriakos Marinakis, characteristically stressed:
“It was with great pleasure that I participated in one of the most substantive and effective seminars I have attended to date. The targeted approach, meaningful information, and continuous development are key elements that do not allow us to fall behind. The coordination carried out by the Region of South Aegean lays solid foundations for the next day.”

Finally, the Mayor of Sifnos, Ms. Maria Nadali, stated:
“This is yet another important initiative by the Region of South Aegean, of exceptional usefulness especially for small island municipalities that do not have specialized personnel in the field of communication. The seminar highlighted the need for immediate and responsible crisis communication management and provided, in a clear and interactive way, concrete guidance both for properly informing our fellow citizens and visitors and for protecting the destination from unfounded rumors that arise when there is no proper and adequate information. Thank you very much!”

Mr. Ioannis Kofinis, Managing Partner of effectus, stated:

At effectus, we remain dedicated to delivering innovative and practical training experiences. This Workshop once again demonstrates how realistic simulation and strategic guidance can empower crisis response teams to act decisively, protect their destination’s reputation, and even turn challenging situations into opportunities.”
